This project is in South West France, surrounded by long-established vineyards. The main building is a house of a type particular to the region: a chartreuse. These beautiful buildings, in this case mostly late 18th and early 19th century, are country houses, often elongated and only one room deep. They were developed as homes for discerning occupiers with a certain l’art de vivre. Large airy rooms are flooded with light from both sides and long windows afford generous views of the surrounding gardens and vineyards. High french doors open onto expansive terraces and breezes are naturally cooling. Generous outbuildings, some used for wine production, are being enhanced and secondary accommodation upgraded. The scope of work encompasses rethinking access and circulation, improving some spatial relationships and introducing new bathrooms, kitchens and services. Our work extends to re-thing the setting of the buildings and the design of new garden and landscape elements. Construction is scheduled to start early in 2022.
